31-Oct-2013

Client: Air Balloon Hill Primary School

Date: September 2013

Location: St George, Bristol

Background: To help ease Bristol’s shortage for primary school places, Air Balloon Hill Primary School in St George has undergone a £5.2million extension. Twelve new classrooms have been built and the school wanted a sustainable and eco-friendly canopy to link the old and new buildings together.

Project details: Commissioned by project contractors, Skanska, Townscape was tasked to develop a sustainable and cost-effective canopy for the primary school.  Townscape created two bespoke design 35 metre canopy shelters composed of piqua hardwood which is Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified. To ensure maximum strength whilst engineering an attractive mono pitch design in the wooden canopy, Townscape used a glulam method of construction.

Result: The hardwood timber canopies developed by Townscape provide an attractive and sustainable link between the old and new school buildings.  The school were impressed at how Townscape was able to combine design and functionality with eco-friendly construction materials and methods.
