York Minister, North Yorkshire
Townscape Products installed PAS 68 Counter Terror Blocks at York Minster's west entrance, matched in York stone to protect two million annual visitors discreetly.
York Minster, officially the Cathedral and Metropolitical Church of St Peter in York, is one of Northern Europe's largest cathedrals and among the UK's most visited attractions. Built nearly 1,000 years ago, the Minster welcomes more than two million visitors annually from around the world, alongside regular services, events, and concerts. The cathedral's historic significance and constant footfall made it a natural target for security concerns. When the Counter-Terrorism Unit issued clear recommendations to protect the west entrance against potential vehicle-borne attacks, the cathedral chapter recognised they needed an urgent and decisive solution.

Protecting such an iconic heritage site presented a real challenge. The cathedral required a Hostile Vehicle Mitigation system at the west entrance that could stop vehicles whilst remaining sympathetic to its ancient surroundings.
We installed PAS 68 certified Counter Terror Blocks finished in York stone, deliberately matched to the cathedral's existing masonry. We blended various sands to get the colour exactly right, ensuring the blocks appeared as natural extensions of the building rather than added security features. Equally important, the installation was complete with our to avoid disturbing any archaeological material or buried heritage, a critical consideration for such a significant historic site.
The completed installation has successfully created a secure open environment where the public can enjoy the attraction. The HVM solution balances accessibility with comprehensive security, protecting visitors and pedestrians while maintaining the welcoming character for the major tourist destination.
Today, Brighton i360 benefits from world-class hostile vehicle mitigation that operates invisibly within its landscape, allowing the tower's remarkable architecture and visitor experience to remain the focal point.
