PAS 68 Bollards FAQs

What's the difference between N1, N2 and N3 rated bollards?
These classifications relate to vehicle weight. N1 covers smaller vehicles up to around 3.5 tonnes, while N2 and N3 cover heavier goods vehicles up to 7.5 tonnes. The right classification depends on the threat assessment for your site — a pedestrianised high street has a different vehicle risk profile to a site near a major road.
What's the difference between PAS 68 and IWA 14 bollards?
Both are impact test standards for hostile vehicle mitigation products. PAS 68 is the established British Standard; IWA 14 is an international workshop agreement that some manufacturers test to as well, often for products used across multiple markets. Some bollards, including several in this range, are dual-certified to both.
Do PAS 68 bollards need a deep foundation?
Standard mount bollards typically need a foundation depth of 600–750mm depending on the rating. Where buried services or shallow substrates rule this out, shallow mount and ultra shallow mount versions are available, down to as little as 100–300mm, without compromising the impact rating.
Can PAS 68 bollards be removed or made removable?
Yes. Alongside root fixed (permanent) bollards, removable versions are available for locations that need occasional vehicle access, such as market squares, event spaces or loading bays, while retaining the same impact rating when in place.
What finishes are available for PAS 68 bollards?
Bollards are typically supplied in galvanised or powder coated steel, with stainless steel or polymer sleeve options for sites where a less overtly security-focused appearance is wanted, such as high streets, school grounds or heritage locations.
How many PAS 68 bollards do I need in a row?
This depends on the rating and site layout, but most ranges specify a minimum array, commonly 3 bollards, to prevent a vehicle from driving between or around them. Single-bollard placements are only used with specific higher-rated products designed for that purpose.
Do PAS 68 bollards help with Martyn's Law compliance?
PAS 68 bollards can form part of the physical protective measures a site uses to meet its obligations under Martyn's Law, particularly for publicly accessible locations assessing vehicle-as-weapon risk. They're one measure among several, and should sit within a wider site security and threat assessment rather than as a standalone compliance step.
